About UsOur Story, Woven in Wool

Our story began in 1894 when the focus was simple - turning the natural warmth and durability of wool into bedding that helped families sleep better. But wool’s possibilities reach far beyond better sleep. That’s why The Woolen Works, a division of the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill, has grown into creating a variety of woolen goods—designed for restful nights, mindful living, and sustainable comfort.

We honor traditional techniques while embracing modern design, ensuring every piece—whether a comforter, a pillow, or a smaller handcrafted good—reflects our commitment in designing goods that bring natural comfort, beauty, and sustainability into everyday life.

Nothing is wasted, everything has purpose, and all of it is made with care.

Our ProcessWool’s Journey, From Flock to Finish

01.

Responsible Sourcing

We begin by choosing only the finest, ethically sourced wool from trusted farms. Each fiber is carefully selected for its purity, softness, and natural strength. This ensures that the foundation of every product is both sustainable and of the highest quality.

02.

Washing with Care

The raw wool is gently washed in 180-degree water, fresh from Lake Huron using only biodegradable soap. This preserves the purity of the fiber while protecting the environment. This ensures that the foundation is both sustainable and of the highest quality.

03.

Naturally Air-Dried

Instead of harsh dryers, the wool is laid out to air dry for 7–10 days. This gentle method preserves the strength and resilience of every fiber.

04.

Processed on Antique Machinery

We use antique carding machines, some over 150 years old, to separate and align the fibers. No chemicals are used — only steam and humidity — keeping the wool’s natural integrity intact.

05.

Crafting the Final Product

In the final stage, our skilled makers transform the wool into finished goods. Depending on the product, the wool may be needle felted, cut and sewn, or formed into soft batting for bedding. Every item is crafted with intention and care.

TestimonialsWhat Wool Clients Say About Us

What an excellent wool store! They carry a little bit of everything. The sheets look very comfortable and feel very soft. We heard a lady coming back for more; she said they were her favorite. The prices are what you would expect for authentic wool items. They also have a shop in the back that cleans and blends the wool for processing. They accept cash or credit cards, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

This is a very nice little shop. They have lots of materials, colored wool, buttons, etc. There are cute stuffed animals, comfy bedding, and nice bags and decorations. They have items like unique pin cushions. If you love to sew or are crafty, you will probably like this shop.

I initially ordered a queen-size comforter but realized upon delivery that I actually needed a king-size. Matt was incredibly quick, attentive, and understanding, making the exchange process seamless despite the mix-up being on my end. The comforter appears to be very well made, and I’m thrilled to have supported a local business!

I walked in here not knowing what to expect but walked out absolutely amazed and glad i went in! They have such great quality blankets, cloths and little decorative stuff. But what i thought was so cool, was they have an old wool mill display to look at! So cool! 😮 …

Love my oversized king wool comforter! This is our second comforter and we couldn’t be happier. Ann was so awesome helping us pick out the fabrics and the matching ties on a super busy Saturday in August. And Abby was amazing in helping with a few hiccups that occurred. Thank you both you are amazing! And the comforter looks amazing in our room along with matching king pillow shams!

As an avid needle-felter, I absolutely love this place! I was able to find some very cool and unique colors of loose wool that I couldn’t find back at home!
